AI & Academic Integrity

Using AI purely as a proofreading tool — similar to spell-check — is widely considered acceptable. The student wrote the original work themselves and was transparent about their tool use. Disclosure is key! That said, always check your specific course or institution policy.

When an assignment is designed to assess your thinking and research skills, outsourcing that structure to AI undermines the assignment's purpose — even without an explicit policy. This sits in a gray zone, but many instructors would consider it academically dishonest, particularly if the role of AI is not acknowledged. When in doubt, ask your professor and disclose.

Having AI generate the core content — and then tweaking it — means the work is not genuinely the student's own. Submitting it without disclosure misrepresents who created the work. Most academic integrity policies would classify this as plagiarism or academic dishonesty, regardless of how much was "changed."

This is the clearest-cut case. Submitting AI-generated work as your own, with no modifications or disclosure, is academic fraud. It deceives the instructor about who did the work, bypasses the learning process entirely, and violates virtually every academic integrity policy in existence.

Saying you used AI "for ideas" does not cover directly copying AI-generated sentences or paragraphs into your work without attribution. Incorporating unquoted, unattributed text — even from AI — is a form of plagiarism. If AI-generated text appears in your paper, it needs to be clearly quoted, attributed, and used within any applicable course guidelines.

While it is possible a professor with a strict AI course policy would consider this plagiarism, particularly if the student does not acknowledge their use of AI, many would likely see this as similar to using a citation tool like Zotero to generate a bibliography. The larger problem is with the quality and accuracy of the generated bibliography. AI tools still sometimes supply inaccurate citation information or misinterpret the request, potentially providing incorrect or fabricated citation elements like DOIs and/or including sources the student did not actually use. You must always verify the accuracy of an AI-generated response even when using AI in courses that allow it.
